Android 9 Pie for Moto X4, G6, G6 Plus, Z2 Force and Z2 Play : Rumour Roundup
The latest iteration of Android has arrived officially on August 6th and the rollout for Google Pixel, Pixel 2 and Essential Phone has already begun. Motorola has announced officially that Moto G6, G6 Plus, G6 Play, Z2 Force, Z2 Play, X4 devices will be updated to Android 9 Pie.
After the acquisition by Lenovo, Motorola slowed down with the rollout of updates. Previously, Motorola G and X series devices competed with Nexus devices in receiving the updates. But now Motorola has changed much and limits G series devices to one major android update. According to the official blog, the rollout of Android Pie will begin in this fall for the above devices.
This time, because of the implementation of Project Treble, Moto G6 Plus and G6 mid-rangers may receive the Android Pie update earlier than the 2017 flagship from Moto. The Moto X4 also may receive the update along with Z2 force and play.
Probable Schedule of Motorola Android Pie Rollout
As Motorola already begun cooking of Pie for its devices, the soaktest might start in late-September or October. We expect that Moto G6 and G6 Plus Android Pie soaktest will begin in October first in Brazil or India. Later in November the full rollout of Android Pie for Moto G6 and G6 Plus might begin.
The Moto X4 Android One and International editions devices might start receiving the Pie update in December 2018 in some regions. The soaktest for Moto Z2 Force and Z2 Play might begin in January or February 2019 and the full rollout may commence in March or April 2019. The flagships received the Oreo update without Treble enabled, so that the Pie rollout will be delayed.
The rollout schedule may change later due to unforeseen technical issues and other problems, so we will keep latest changes posted here. We request users to bookmark this page and keep visiting regularly to know latest news about Android Pie updates.
What new features coming to my Moto device with Pie ?
As Motorola uses stock android with very minimal changes in its midrange and flagship devices, almost all new features and improvements of Pie will come to Z2 series, G6 series and X4 devices.
The Pie update will come with new Material Design 2.0 interface, new Easter egg, revamped Volume controls, App Actions, Gesture based-Interface, Adaptive Battery and Brightness and many Security improvements.
However, Digital Well Being and App slices features haven’t arrived with the official release of Android Pie. At this moment Digital Well being is available as Beta for only Pixel users. Google told that these features will come in another update in this fall. So most likely in Android 9.1 or 9.0.1 update Moto devices may receive the Digital well being and App slices features.
Notch Support and Simulate
The 9th major iteration of Android came up with native support for notches or cutouts on the display. Recent evidence points towards a third generation Pixel device with a display cutout and Android Pie OS. However, Moto G6 series and Z2 series devices don’t have any notches but users can simulate notches on Android 9 Pie.
Users can go to the Developer Options section in the Settings Menu and tap on Simulate a display with cutout under the Drawing subheading. Users can select the required size of the cutout and enable developer options, then the flagship phone looks with simulated notch on the top.
The Android Pie update arrived with Shush feature which is an enhancement for Do Not Disturb. The Shush mode gets activated automatically when user puts the device face down. Then, Shush mode enables Do not disturb and so there won’t no notifications beeps, pings and calls.
The feature helps to reduce smartphone addiction along with digital wellbeing. Google may refine the feature further in the upcoming update.
Android Pie Gesture based interface
The Gesture based interface is a new UI in Android Pie, which uses Gestures to easily switch between apps and do multitasking like a breeze. The navigation in Pie shows only a small pill shaped Home button and when the user swipes up on the button, recent apps will appear in horizontal app switcher and to switch between apps, user swipe right or left on the button.
The new Chevron shaped Back button appears only inside apps when necessary, Keyboard button appears in the Navigation bar when typing to switch between keyboards easily. Autorotate button also appear in Navigation bar some times inside apps, so users can rotate the screen without reaching for Quick Settings toggles.
ART performance for Apps
The Android Pie update brings improved app performance and efficiency through expanded ART runtime. The Android Engineers designed Pie to use execution profiles to optimize apps and reduce in-memory-footprint. Because novel ART runtime, DEX files of popular apps will get reduced by 11% after updating to Android 9. As the reduced DEX file sizes correlate with reduced memory usage and faster app start-up times, Moto users can get massive app performance boost with the Android Pie update.
Update on 29/11/2018:
It seems that Motorola has started the Android Pie rollout for Moto X4 devices after running several soak tests. Earlier this month, the official soak test of Pie began for Moto X4 devices. Now some reports from Brazilian users point towards final rollout of Android 9. The update comes with November security patch and the version number is PPW 29.69-26 and packs all the standard goodies of Android Pie like App actions, Adaptive Battery and so on. We expect the rollout will spread to the US, Europe and India very soon, most likely in the next month. Android Pie is the second major update for Moto X4 users, so we are not sure about another major update for X4.
